The following are cases that have not been resolved.
My problems started with one line at exactly seventeen months. Progressively worse and now at nineteen months have seven of the vertical lines. Three cyan, three yellow and one purple. I'm currently on the Dell roundabout, and I am now with my second representative, and fifth E-mail. I even offered to go halves on the price of a new screen, but they have hidden behind the one year warranty. Is it just me, or when you e-mail them questions; they don’t actually answer them but apologise for the inconvenience, whilst giving nothing away. It's no great hardship for me to message / call them, so I intend to bug the heck out of them till I get a satisfactory answer.
I have the same vertical line problem as everyone else. Mine started showing symptoms at 18 months. At the moment i'm paying Dell $381 USD to get my i9300 fixed because it's my main system. However, this does not mean that I will be dropping the matter. I will be calling and writing letters to Dell untill something is done.
Vertical lines started about 18 months after purchase of my Dell Inspiron 9300.
The displays Dell uses are maufactured by LG Phillips, a Korean company which is currently trying to create the largest lcd panels available. I wonder if Phillips will appreciate the bad vibes created by Dell refusing to take responsibility (http://www.lgphilips-lcd.com/). I am attempting to get a response from Phillips about whether or not they have already (or are planning) to correct the defect, and if so how one can tell from the part number or batch number or whatever (I operate a repair shop and would hate to replace a customer's display with one that will likely fail).
The LG Phillips part number on the display in my Inspiron 9300 is LP171WX2 B4. These displays can be purchased on ebay for about $225 (though one schmuck is trying to sell a display that has already developed vertical lines for $79 - I guess he thinks its a good deal because it has so few lines...).
Online Dell service manuals have instructions for removing and dissaembling laptop displays. It is a faily simple process to replace the lcd panel (many could do it themselves and any competent local computer shop should be able to do the job in well under an hour).
If Dell cared about their customers they would at least make replacement lcd panels available at cost (probably $100 or less) since so many are failing so soon after warranty. Instead Dell priced a replacement lcd panel for my Inspiron 9300 at $500 whether I do the work myself or send it in, about the cost of a comparable new laptop. Not a good way to treat long term customers.
Here is the text of a letter I'm sending to to Michael Dell
First vertical pixel wide line on LCD 17 " screen last weekend. Its about 1 inch in from the right hand side. Its not the video card: I connected my desktop modem and I also took the screen off to make sure the screen and connector weere sittng properly. I have not contacted Dell yet after getting slightly disheartened by seeing all the hassle customers were geytting from unhelpful support and the refusenik attitude/ plus I have been working away the last week. I will be contacting Dell within the next 10 days.
Samsung WUXGA matte LCD. 13 months after purchase, bottom third began cutting out. Pressing on the left edge would temporarily remedy it. Eventually, it progressed to a point where the bottom third would only flash prismatic effects of colors untill it was purple. I know about computers. Not the GPU, not the LCD cable. It is a flaw in the materials used to make the ribbon connectors that are attached to the edges of the LCD pane. I have found in my on line reseach that this is the case with Samsung AND the Phillips screens used by Dell at the time. Dell now uses Sharp screens which are manufactured in house (at Sharp, by Sharp), as oppossed to being manufactured by a third party. Dell could remedy this situation easily if they would simply release a BIOS update that would allow the Sharp WUXGA LCD to work in the 9200 & 9300 Inspirons. I have had to spend $415.00 American on a replacement screen on a notebook that I spent $1500.00 on. This will end up the same as Dell's 5100 series fiasco, which is currently the subject an American class action litigation.
Inspiron 9300 laptop lcd screen developed a single vertical line in November 2006. The line is one pixel wide just to the right of center. The line extends across the entire screen from top to bottom. The location of the defect in the center of the screen is a distraction on all open windows. This line is on all screen displays including bios. I have updated driver for video card and reseated ribbon cable with no improvement. I have attached another display and line is not present on the second display. The line must be due to a defective lcd screen. Replacement of the lcd screen is required to remove the defect. The laptop was purchased in April 18 2005. The original configuration lists the screen as : T4976 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, WXGA+, STANDARD PANELS WORKING GROUP, 17, LENGTH/LONG
I have 7 Vertical lines on my LCD.. first line started about 15 months
My company bought this i9300 for me in April 2005. A 1 pixel wide blue line (slightly-left-of-center of screen) developed in July 2006. The LCD is a WUXGA manufactured by LG. The 1 year warranty had expired by that time. My boss (company) paid for a new LCD which I installed myself. This PC was never dropped or mishandled and has rarley left my desk. The model # of the defective LCD was: LPL0000, LG Philips WUXGA (Dell part J9662) LG-Philips LP171WU1 (DP/N KR-0J9962-56252-52O-0322)
17" UXGA display w/ multiple vertical lines appearing, first one about a month ago, then a second line appeared a day or so later, as of 11/06 I'm up to seven vertical lines seemingly randomly placed on the screen, some are different colors. No apparent cause, my notebook has been very well taken care of and rarely gets moved.
Two vertical lines, one purple the other blue about 1 inch to the left of the center of the screen. There is also one intermittent line that appears about 3 inches farther to the left on the solid two. The intermittent line was the first to appear, the other two appeared a couple days later.
Mine started with a purple vertical line on the right side at about 18 months. Approximately a month lor so ater, a second cyan line on the left side. They are visible on all screen displays. The laptop was purchased February 22, 2005. The invoice lists the screen as : T17" UltraSharp Wide Screen XGA+ (part # W5411).
My computer developed fine vertical lines one month after warranty expiry. I purchased my Dell laptop on May 2005 and in August 2006 (15 months later) I noticed 1 vertical line on the left side of the screen which eventually increased in number. I have not experienced such problem on my previous laptops (other brands). I hope Dell will help replacing my screen as I do believe that this is company defect.
Vertical lines started appearing around June 2006 at the rate of about 2 per week. Usually yellow, cyan or magenta in colour. LCD was an LP171WU1 1920x1200 model. I replaced the LCD with one I sourced outside of Dell, though the picture quality is far lower than the original LCD (poor viewing angles, poor contrast).
Model: Inspiron 5160 No problems with this notebook, until last week I played a DVD and a vertical red line 1px wide appeared about 1cm in from the right hand side of the screen. I thought it was a virus so ran a check - everything clear. Just now a second vertical line has appeared, this time blue, again 1px wide but about 1/3 of the way across from the right hand side of the screen. I've only been online, not been watching a DVD or doing anything that you'd think might cause it. Utter mystery. Please, Dell, sort this out!
Started with 2 vertical lines about a month ago and I now have 16 lines in yellow, purple and cyan colours. One of them flashes about twice a second. Very anoying and upsetting as this machine has been looked after and used as a desktop replacement so has not been subjected the the usual wear and tear associated with a portable. I have tested with an external monitor and no line appears on the external monitor. My Screen is the top of the range 1920 x 1600 WUXGA for which I apid extra. I spent £2,434 on this machine plus software and this is my second £2000 plus Dell laptop. I have been very pleased with Dell machines up untill now and have recomended them to friends and family. This may well be my last Dell computer if they don't do the right thing for all the people suffering this problem.
I now have about 6 vertical lines on my LCD screen on my Inspiron 510m laptop. The original computer developed this same problem within a few months of delivery - Dell replaced that screen under warranty. I didn't record the service date but estimate around May 05. This screen is the replacement screen, again with the same problem Dell have refused to acknowledge they have a problem and say because its out of warranty I will have to pay. The price of over AU$600 (Australian) is getting close to the cost of replacing with a new computer. Needless to say I'm not happy about paying this price. I have been a loyal supporter of Dell, and apart from this have been very impressed with their service and attention to detail. So much so, that my wife now has a Dell laptop, as do my my son and daughter-in-law.
Purchased my 9300 in April 05. A few weeks ago it developed a 2 inch white verticle line down the middle of the lcd. Called dell and they would not fix it because im out of warranty. I hope this website will help out because if not i will never buy a dell product in my life again. I've also sent a letter to Mr. Dell. If everyone on this site would do that, it would make more of an impact. Just a thought.
My Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop was purchased sometime early last year in 2005, and two months ago the first of many vertical lines has appeared on my screen. They are multi-colored and seemingly at random spots around the screen. Of course this all happened a good month or two after my warranty expired. Boo.
16 Months after purchase a red line appeared on the left portion of the screen 2 weeks afterwords, the red line turned into a yellow line 2 weeks later a magenta line appeared to the right of the yellow line 3 weeks later a cyan line appeared almost directly in the middle of the screen. Any sort of warrenty I had ran out a year after system purchase. No attempt to contant Dell as of yet due to low numbers of resolved cases being reported.
vertical lines on LCD
Single-pixel Line appeared on my Dell Inspiron 9300 Screen just a week ago (Nov 27, 2006). I always use an external monitor since I need a bigger resolution, the line doesnt appear on the external monitor. I know this is a hardware issue and its very crucial for me to have the main LCD working properly. I work in the multimedia and design industry. I use this system for all client presentation. And one of the major reason I chose this system its because of the impressive display quality.
It appears that my problem is common for all same models (inspiron 9300) purchased at the same time frame as (jan-april 2005). I tried calling Dell and asked for assistance, which was refused because my warranty already expired (I have a 1 yr warranty, expired last april 2006). It took me 6 hours trying to get some assistance from Dell (either Dell disconnect me, hang up on me, forward me or kept me waiting for 30-45minutes and just never get back to me) and after all that trouble the only 2 option I have is to use an external monitor or pay several hundred dollars to have the LCD replaced (and probably have the similar problem occur several months later).
I would like to request Dell to take responsibility for this. Because this is pretty much a manufacturing issue. I do not understand why Dell would set that kind of price tag (this model starts at $1500-$3500, it was one of their top of the line laptops back then) and let the customer pay for its LCDs limitation.
I have always admired DELL service and products for the past 7 years, I've been constantly approached by my co-workers, friends and family about good brands to purchase and I've always recommended DELL. I guess it hurts me to experience this kind of service, considering my continuous support and loyalty. I do not find it right my investment is short lived and be asked to pay extra to keep it functioning properly.

I've sent this message to their customer service, as expected their response is "I apologize for my inability to replace the LCD, as the warranty for your system has expired on 4/21/2006, it is not possible to replace the LCD on our part and you need to purchase a new LCD. For further reference please note that Dell eSupport & Services does not handle customer warranty issues. If you need assistance with the warranty you should contact Customer Service at customer_service@dell.com "
Again Dell Failed Me!!!! This is not what I am asking them to do, I need this to be replaced or taken care of outside my own expense.
single vertical line dead center
One line appeared about 3 weeks ago. A few days later the second line appeared. Today the third... I paid too much money for this computer to be having this kind of problem just over a year later. I am a teacher and this is a large investment for me. Please help.
I have 3 lines on my laptop. The third line just appeared to today. Forst one happened about 3 months ago.
bought the comp. in the u.s in 04/05 with 1 yr warranty. a few months after warranty ran out, 1 or 2 vertical lines appeared. then an avg. of 2 or 3 every month. now i have 12 lines on the screen. of all colors
My display seems to have the same problem as described. I have 3 vertical lines although they did not all present themselves at the same time. First the blue one and next a green one right next to it and finnaly a brownish line right next to the other two. I have yet to speak to dell about it although i will be soon before it gets any worse (assuming it does). I hope this post helps someone and i hope dell helps me when i call.
Two months after my XPS GEN 2 17" WUXGA warranty ran out, there was a 2 inch "blurred" verticle stripe approx. 2" right of center. It then ( the "blur" ) went all black. Now over one third of my screen is useless. Black and multi-colored, although the colors always change. I just purchased a new screen off the internet, but I have a few concerns. If this a fault in a motherboard defect, is my new screen going to fail also? What about the Inspirion 9300 I recently purchased for my Wife? Will Dell reimburse me for this OBVIOUS problem with their product? They hardly even support the Gen 2 anymore. Hmmmm. God forbid if your warranty is expired. They dont even want to talk to you.
I now have 13 lines on my screen. This is ridiculous!
vertical lines of different colors on the left and right hand sides of the screen. About 8 total.
One sigle vertical line o pixels down exactly the middle of the screen
3 vertical lines, one showed up early november 06, the following first week of dec 06, the third in the second week of dec '06....great timing too, finals time, all i would need is for the whole thing to black out on me while in a room typing a timed exam...thank god there does not seem to be any cases of the whole thing crapping out...yet

Low and behold after about 18 months the vertical lines start to appear, I am upto 8 lines now and still going....the sooner this can be sorted out the better....
Vertical line on the right hand side of the screen. One pixel width. The line appeared on 10/06.
Our problem began September of 2006. We couldn't see the bottom of the screen. I called Dell, because it was out of warranty they said they could fix it for $498, but of course it had to be sent in. The last time we sent one in they lost the whole thing so ended up after six months of dealing with them getting a new one at their cost. Anyway, this is the new one and the screen isn't working. I wasn't going to pay $498, also, my son needed it so didn't want to take the time to send it in so we ordered a screen from parts-people.com for $350 including shipping and put it in ourselves. Problem fixed but at our time and cost so...... Now, my daughter's Inspiron 6000 screen is messed up too. Same problem??? At least, it is still under warranty, but this is the second time we have sent it in so.......

I paid extra to get the nicer screen for my 9300. Shortly after my warranty had expired, a noticeable vertical line of dead pixels showed up on my screen. Did not abuse the laptop in any way. Hearing all these other complaints makes me wonder why Dell isn't doing anything about it. I hope some resolution comes out of this.
My Inspiron 9300 17" was 16 months young when I came home one night to it sitting on my desk just as I had left it. Opened it up like always... and there it was. The purple line of death... (although my first one was actually yellow). I was angry... doublechecked and verified my suspicion that my computer was four months out of warranty... but I figured it was an isolated incident and I was just screwed. Whatever. Its just a line... I can deal with it, right? A month went by. And then there were two. This one actually was purple. Both were relatively cose together on the far right of the screen. A monthish later, the real slumper came, though. Last night, I came home from work, once again, my laptop just the way it had been left... except for the addition of a lime green one. Right smack dab down the middle. So that no matter what I'm looking at, I have to see it. A unavoidable nuisance. Perhaps if it weren't for the fact that another one will rear its ugly head at any time, it wouldn't be so bad. But I'm resigned to the fact that slowly but surely, these things will eat away my LCD that I paid so much for, and kill it like cancer. A quick google, however, gave some hope and I found I am SO far from alone. Not only here, but also on Dell's own support forums, and on third party review websites (like eopinions) I have found extensive comlaints about this. There is no denying it is manufacturer error. Dell denies it, but their very manner of handling my phone calls has proven that they are more than aware of the issue. When I first phoned technical support, I didn't even ahve to tell them whether or not I had connected an external monitor, etc. I mentioned that my 18 month old Inspiron 9300 17" had pixel wide vertical multicolored lines in the screen and was told right away that it was a faulty LCD that needed replacement. They of course wanted me to pay for it. I told them no. Thus began a nice big merry go round of phone calls. Managers didnt want to talk to me, I was told I would recieve call backs within hour time frames. I didn't, so I called them. Eventually I did manage to speak to someone who seemed to maybe want to help. Maybe. Of course he tried to say that it was not a known issue blah blah blah but by standing my ground and referring him to this thread, a google search, and his own support forums, he broke down quick. Never admitted that it was a Dell problem but quickly started to barter with me about how much a new LCD would cost. If it weren't a known issue, there is no way that he would have been SO quick to do that. Told him that wasn't good enough, that I deserved a new one free of charge, and that after the level of disregard the company had given my issue there was no way that I was giving them yet another dime of my hard earned money, especially not for something that was their fault. He claimed he did not have the bility to authorize such a replacement (not sure whether or not this was the truth) but that he would make sure that his higherups that did would give me a call tomorrow. Of course I have yet to hear from Dell again. They will never, ever again recieve the business of myself or my family or friends, I will see to it personally.
I've discussed this with a Dell rep within the past month and was told that it was no longer Dell's problem. Shellee Pruitt of Dell gave me a very short and blunt answer that just because my warranty had expired that it was not their responsibility for THEIR FAULTY LAPTOP DISPLAY! I now have approximately TWENTY vertical lines on my screen that display from startup to shutdown. This is not a fluke, this is Dell's issue and it's ridiculous that it hasn't been acknowledged as a manufacturer's defect yet. The sheer number of complaints should evidence this claim. I'm simply requesting what is necessary: that my laptop's display be replaced.
I have a problem with a blue vertical line, one pixel wide, appearing on my LCD about 1/4 of the way from the left. I purchased my laptop in July 2005 and the problem appeared in Dec 2006 when my warranty ran out. Dell technical support told me that they believe it is an LCD failure and asked me to contact the out of warranty department for additional service. It seems that this problem is occuring with a lot of other Dell customers and hope that Dell would do the right thing and offer replacement to all faulty LCD's at no cost to its customers even if the warranty has eexpired.
Inspiron 9200, 2 years old. 1/3 of the screen from the right-side, a beautiful, eye-grabbing, red line extends vertically through my screen. X4766 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, WXGA+, STANDARD PANELS WORKING GROUP, 17, SAMSUNG This seems to be happening to many people. I really hope Dell does the right thing...
Grey stripe appear on the left hand side of WUXGA (Philips LG) LCD panel mid November 2006, occupying about 1/6 of the screen.
I have two light blue vertical lines running down the left and right side of my monitor. My warranty expired 5 months before this happened so I've been dealing with Dell's Expired Warranty Service. Not Resolved . ...12/21 - Got my third blue line today, this one right down the middle of the screen. Got the XPS for gaming and it sure is fun playing with the blue lines....12/30 4th line today a white one. NO luck with dell bounced around managers and supervisors and told there is nothing they can do but if I want to take it to customer care I can.
I have now about 35 of those vertical lines and it's getting worse . Time for Dell to admit it and replace those screens .
Hi I have the same problem I heard about this and tried to get a warranty before this happened to me and all they would offer is that dell on call and I don't know what that details they keep ignoring my problem I guess because I don't have a warranty I have a inspiron 9200 lines started about a month ago now i have five lines now and another one trying to become permanent do I have to have a case with dell? because I don't believe I have one and how do I start one? Thanks Tom
Model: J9662 LCD,17,WUXGA,GWVA,LG I have 3 pixel lines now and dell refuses to fix it, the first of which appeared in October-November 2006. I am contemplating filing a class action lawsuit in the summer if this is not resolved.
Horizontal/Vertical lines appeared on my screen the day I received the laptop. I phoned Dell Support and they told me to format and reinstall the operating system, windows XP. I have since reinstalled the operating system and it does the same thing, I've also tried other operating systems and had the same results. I only have this problem when the laptop is first turned on, basically when the screen/video card is cold. I get vertical lines sometimes horizontal lines, and what looks like pixelating. Here is a link to a small video. http://members.shaw.ca/aaronc/dell.mpg The video doesn't really do it justice though. It looks alot worse in person.
I bought my Dell 9300 in April/05, ran perfect for 15 months then 1 line appeared & then another. its now dec 06 I have 10 vertical pixel lines across screen. now get this...2 months back i called Dell about it and was told absolutly its the graphic card, ok so I purchased a new one from them. it took a month to finily have it installed only to find that it wasnt the problem. the installation tech recomended replacing the inverter, ok did that to... not the problem ether. $250. parts & labor & figuring on scrapping it when i found that many others were having the exact same problem. nothing but the run around from dell till today.... I called Dell was transfered 3 times having to repeat my self each time then asked for a manager in the out of repair department, a Mr. Kamal, badge # 905680 I pushed the fact that several online forums exist and document this problem He promised to return my call tomorrow after researching issue.
Just like many of you I noticed the first vertical line appear on the left side of my screen right at 18 months after receiving my laptop. I got my laptop as a refurbished system. Since then about 15-20 new lines have appeared and new ones keep showing up weekly.
I get the vertical line on the screen, dell charges the service fee beteen $199 and $498 (plus tax) for its component defect. I am very upset.
Inspiron 2200 -
The problem began with a few vertical lines missing (in blue), in october.
Now, at the begining of december, the left half of the screen is completely covered with vertical lines (in fact a little more than half).
Due to this evident fabrication defect, my computer is no more usable.
I just bought two other Dell laptops (9400) for my company. I hope this wasn't a mistake. I will wait for an answer before to buy some others. I'd like Dell to stop hiding, so that I will be able to continue buying their laptops.
Today, I've called the Dell technical support (I had to wait more than 45 minutes) and they said me that it's not a recurrent case, so I will have to pay for the reparation!
four vertical lines in screen - problem began October 2006
Cyan lines covering a majority of the screen. Have not used the system since heat and smoke joined the dazzeling light show months ago...
4 vertical lines on LCD screen. Very annoying, started happening after just a little over one year of ownership.
In early November of '06 my screen developed one vertical cyan 1-pixel wide line in the middle of the screen. Last week another line appeared about 2mm to the left of the first. Of course my warranty expired last month so this will be a fun fight to get this fixed. I tried reseating the ribbon cable to the monitor and even reseating the video card on the motherboard (I service PC's for a living and have no problems opening a PC or laptop after the warranty expires), and also hooked up an external monitor to make sure its not the card. So armed with my own troubleshooting, I'm heading to Dell to see what they will do.
four vertical purple lines.
It's 5160 2 yellow and 2 purple lines
As soon as my warrenty ran out at the beginning of 2006 lines started to appear on my screen. At first they were slow to arrive but then they began to appear more and more frequently. At the moment I have somewhere between 70 and 80 lines with new ones appearing every few days. When each new line arrives it usually flashes on and off for a couple of hours before finally deciding to just stay on for good. The colors of the lines are cyan, yellow and purple. There are one ot two white lines where the other colors have collided. I didn't file a support request with Dell because I run Linux. It's been my experience that vendors tend to use this as a get-outta-jail free card, and it's usually not worth the hassle arguing with them. Thought I'd just add my name to this list in case it helps others who are actively seeing help from Dell.
Vertical line appeared after 2 years of normal use. The line appeared just before my eyes.
Many colored vertical lines showed up about two months ago. Now have a 2 inch black line in middle and 1 inch washed out white line on right portion of screen. All diagnostics run and latest software downloaded and nothing fixed the problem. No warranty in effect now so I'm expecting to pay a LOT to get this fixed. :| Just tried hooking up a 17" Dell UltraSharp monitor to the 9200. It worked great on that monitor which leads me to believe it's not a software or video card problem, but the LCD itself. Probably cheaper at this point to just buy a separate monitor and use that instead of the 9200's LCD.
Just a few days ago, around December six to nine, 2006, I had noticed a purple line appear on the LCD screen, about three inches from the left side. I first thought it was a graphical error on the game I was playing, but after restarting the computer, the purple line also appeared in the BIOS. From that point, I knew something was wrong with the monitor. I tried to install and reinstall new video drivers, but since it was happening in the BIOS anyways, I knew that would not work. I then went online, hoping to see if there wre other people having the same problem as mine. And behold there they were. Forums were flooded with people with the same problem as mine... and they wree all dell users! From what I saw most were even using the Dell Inspiron 9xxx series! I then knew i was the victim of a faulty laptop display. Yesterday, December 11, I had recieved my second line. This time, it was yellow, and ran straight down the middle of the display. I then called Dell about the problem. I was very polite, and of course so was the customer representative. In fact, her supervisor even asked for the phone from her. Though he did not give me any real solutions, other then paying a hefty amount for a screen replacement, installation charges, shipping charges, and labling charges, he did try to give some sort of excuse. He did not say that the lcd screens were faulty . Instead, he said that since the monitor is so big, carrying around the laptop could put pressure on the tubes in the monitor, thus dissrupting the monitor. Since I work at a big name electronics retail store, in the laptop department, I knew that his excuse was bogus. Even if it was true, the monitor should still last at LEAST 3 years. I am going to call again tommorow, and ask for the same supervisor that I had talked to. My family has been using Dell products for over four years. In fact, everyone in my immediate family owns one Dell computer. My mother has a Dell Latitude, my father has a Dell Inspiron, and my sister has a Dell Dimension desktop. Even three of my cousins, all brothers, have one Dell Insprion each. But if they cannot admit there is a problem and replace our screens for free, then Dell can consider that a whole family of customers lost.
I have a virtical line on my screen that just popped up today it is one pixel wide and directly in the middle of my screen
About one month ago (17 months of my computers life), suddenly a vertical bright band appered on my Dell Insporin 510M LCD display. It is possible to adjust the light intesity of the whole screen, however this band is brighter than the rest of the monitor. I called DELL technical service in Frankfurt Germany. They kept me on phone and sending me from department to department for 45 min. An finally they gave me and offer to change the LCD display for 275 euros.... After learning that many other have the same prblems due to low quality LCD display. I would liek to join this community to make more preassure on DELL to change our LCD display with no costs. I will be happy if anyone writes me info about any good priced LCD display for an inspiron 510M, which trade marks of LCDs fits to Inspiron 510M. All the best emre
Vertical Lines all over the screen
I have the same vertical line problem as everybody here. Summing up, dell is selling shitty laptops. Since they refuse to fix the obvious manufacturer defects, the best what we can do is stop buying them and tell our friends to stay away from dell company.
I have a 9300 UXGA with the high-gloss screen that has this problem!
Total of 8 lines of various shades of blue, yellow, and red. Have been appearing for about a week now and naturally my computer has been out of warranty for a while.
My Dell Inspiron 9300 was shipped on 9/6/2005. December 14, 2006 a pink vertical line appeared. I shows up in the bois. It does not show up on an external monitor, so I'm sure it is an issue with the LCD panel. Dell needs to RECALL this product. I have bought so far 3 other dell PCs over the years, but I think I will have to wait until this is resolved before I ever buy another DELL.
A month after my Inspiron 9300 wasn't under waranty any more, I've got two vertical line on my screen : One red and one cyan. I hopre Dell France will be nice !
I have a lovely red vertical line right in the centre of the screen..it contrasts beatifully with the blue background. It also appears in the Bios screen, but not on an external monitor. Very disappointed as I paid extra for the higher resolution screen. I have 6 yr old laptops at work used constantly each day with perfect screens! My dell is only used for 2 hours a day max..this LCD is clearly not fit for purpose and contradicts the Sales of Goods Act. I shall be writing to Dell and will let you all know how I get on.
On December 9, 2006, out of the blue, a very noticeable BLUE vertical line exactly 3 inches in from the left side of the screen, suddenly appeared on the LCD of my Inspiron 9300. Hmm. Here I am, just sitting at my desk, typing away at my work when this annoying line shows up and will NOT go away. I went to the Dell Community Forum, followed the directions to try and diagnose the problem, hoping it would be something very minor that I can fix on my own without costing a lot of money. Did the whole PSA Diagnostics thing, and then I tried connecting an external monitor to make sure it wasn't a bad video card. Well, the line only appears on the 9300 LCD. The warranty for this laptop expired on March 20, 2006, and the unit itself cost me only a few dollars shy of $2000.00, so I really was not expecting that in less than 2 years of light use, it would already have a serious, very expensive problem. I have taken EXTREMELY GOOD CARE of this computer; I paid too much money to be careless in handling it everyday. This computer has been spoiled - I've never used it for games, keep it in a cool, dust free environment, and I seriously do baby this thing. No one else touches it. In less than 2 years of ownership, the screen is already bad and I am VERY DISAPPOINTED. So, let me tell you what I did. I called Dell on December 10, 2006 about trying to get it fixed. The dude in the expired warranty dept. who I talked to said I would have to pay $39 + tax first to have the problem diagnosed. From there, they would determine how much more it will cost to fix the problem. He did say, however, that is sounded like I did have a defective LCD, but had to be sure first. I don't need it diagnosed; I already know what the problem is. I told him I would get back to him. I decided to research the issue online a little more and found out that it is widespread and obviously a real problem, especially for this particular model of Dell's laptop computers. I cannot work without a computer though, so I ordered one of their new XPS M1210 models online a couple of days ago. I thought I could use this new one in the meantime because surely Dell will do the right thing and fix my i9300 for free now. After all, I am a good customer and just bought another one of their $2000.00 computers. Wishful thinking here. I called them back today, December 15, 2006, still trying to get my 9300 fixed. I spoke with the department manager this time, after speaking with a regular associate about the problem. This time, I was told that the only way the LCD could possibly be bad is if it was cracked, and that my real problem was a bad video card. I said it was NOT the video card... this guy insisted it WAS. He then said I would have to authorize a charge of $199.00 + tax on a credit card right now to ship it to them through DHL, and for an initial parts order. Then, if they determine after they get my computer that I am right and it IS the LCD, I will have to authorize another $299.00 or more + tax on a credit card before they will finish working on it. That’s supposed to be a “special deal” of $100 off the regular price because I said I would never buy from them again, nor would my employers if they didn’t fix it. They said they would call me to let me know exactly how much more it would be when they got my laptop from DHL. After that, I should get it back in 10 - 12 business days. I am not paying $500 or more to replace an LCD that was sold to me defective to begin with. Oh yeah, I forgot... I was also told that if they replaced the old LCD, the new one would come with a warranty of 3 months. Um, NO. Something needs to be done about this crap. This is, no doubt, a RECALL ISSUE.
Sad, but I'm joining the club, about 2 months ago the first vertical line appeared (just after 1 year warranty expired) but a couple days ago i had a second one. I'm very disapointed.....this is my fourth dell laptop (and my last one) in the last two weeks I'd warned my friens about getting dell laptops. The good thing is that my computer came with 3 years extended warranty (haven't call dell yet so i don't know what their story will be) for what I've seen, This is an issue that dell will have to take as a deffective item and has to be recalled, no doubt of that . I'll keep you updated
My line only appeared today. 1 vertical line, as described. It is blue, unless on a white backgrond then it goes red. I am just hopit it doesn't progress as my cd drive doesn't work either so I can't back up anything anyways, if I need to get a new laptop!
Thank you for setting up this site. First yellow line appeared two months after one year warranty expired. Now there are 4 lines, 1 blue and 3 yellow. I will be contacting Dell.
My display problem started also with one line at seventeen months. At this time, I called the german Dell support. Dell sent me an offer to change the display for the "nice price" of 568€, because my Inspiron is out of warranty(1 year). I ignored this offer.... Meanwhile, there are 25 lines.
I have one single yellow/white (usually) line just right of center on my laptop. It showed up in late October 2006, and I should've contacted Dell at that point, but didn't have the ability (we are now living in Costa Rica). If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know, as it appears that you can't even email Dell unless you have a valid warranty, and if you call them they will charge you $39??
Started with one pink line on the right side of the screen. It's been 4 months since it started happening, and it's up to about 15-20 lines. The best part is now they are starting to flicker, like christmas lights or fireworks. Very cool to look at, if I was at a parade. Called Dell CS, and was transfered about 4 times within an hour. They said I would have to pay for a new monitor since my warranty is up. Had to go to work, so I said i'd call back later.
I purchased a Dell Inspiron 9300 in april 2005. I woke up today December 17 2006 (about 5 months after my warrenty has expired) and There is a vertical yellow/white line about a little to the left of the center of the computer. When I turn on my computer it does not go on right away. It seems to go on right when the windows screen boots up. It then stays on NEVER goes away. I have yet to contact dell but it does not seem like it will help and dont know what to do.
Line of blue pixels about 2" from left side of screen... now a flickering line of yellow pixels same distance opposite side...
right now I have 7 vertical lines going down my screen of assorted colors. my sister has the same computer and she sent her back to get fixed. they charged an outrageous amount of money to fix it and took a few weeks but she hasn't seen any lines since
My monitor developed the purple line of death approximately two months ago. I now have another (green) line beginning to appear, though it comes and goes. I have not contacted Dell yet, as I cannot afford to be without my laptop due to my current workload. 12/17/2006 - I have e-mailed Dell Technical Support with my report, and also linked to this website. 12/17/2006 -- Wow. Check this out -- Immediately below is my text to Dell's Technical Support, and following that is Dell's response (received less than 90 minutes later): Me to Dell: My monitor is developing colored vertical stripes of approximately one pixel width. My research shows this to be a commonly developing problem with Inspiron 9300s shipped in the spring of 2005, as was mine. The monitor started with one stripe, and has now developed a second. Others with this problem report that more stripes will likely develop. There are also numerous reports of hesitation on the part of Dell to acknowledge and address this problem satisfactorily, leading many to swear off purchasing from Dell in the future. I hope to have better luck so as to counteract this trend. Please see www.dellverticalline.com for additional reports. I have run the computer with an external display device and did not have the same problem. Dell to me: Dear Rhonda, Thank you for choosing Dell Hardware Warranty Support. I apologize and truly regret any inconvenience this matter may have caused and appreciate your patience. Rhonda, in accordance with your service contract, we have set-up a service call to replace the defective hardware. We will ship the parts next business day to the service vendor. The service technician should contact you within 1 or 2 business days to schedule an appointment for service at your convenience. . . . I will continue to update the list as events unfold. Wish me luck, as I do you! 12/24/06 -- Happy holidays to all! A local service person began calling me approximately one day after my exchange with Dell -- my monitor, by the way, now has four -- count 'em, four -- lines of death. Because I am using my laptop most of every day, I asked him to repair it after the first of the year. He agreed. So far, so good! I'll keep you posted! Oh, and by the way, for those who do not have Dell's technical support e-mail, here is the address from which the above message came: US_CTS_Mobile_Support@dell.com. Good luck!
First vertical line appeared 3 days ago after 20-month-use. Then yesterday I got the second one. They're on the right side of the LCD, both of them blue. Will try to negotiate with Dell tomorrow. They should recall this LCD.
The first line appeared 14 months after I received the laptop. That was 2 weeks ago. I now have 3 lines and the computer is out of warranty. Aside from the battery recall issue, I also had problems with the DVD drive after a few months. I am in the process of contacting Dell about the screen problem and I will not rest until they resolve this issue. If they don't I will never buy another product from the company and ensure that I tell everyone I know to spread the word that Dell products cannot be relied up to last for any length of time.
I am with you guys! The same problem!( 24 lines) I ll never buy dell again
Started acting up in 12/2006. Up to 5 vertical lines now - about 2 new lines a week so far - really pretty: red, purple, yellow. I looked at my LCD: it is a 15" SXGA+ model LP150E07 designed August 2004 by LG. Phillips LCD Co., Ltd
Got the 1st line in September 06, a month out of warranty. Since then they have been showing up regularly. As of now I have 23 of assorted colors, very colorful but hugely annoying.
Here is the answer from Dell : "any unforeseen technical fault arises after the warranty has been expired is beyond our control for free replacement . " My answer to this : "The Sale of Goods Act states that goods must not have inherent faults (those present at the time of purchase and design faults that cause problems later in the product's life) . It's obvious that a high-end product like the Inspiron 9300 has a life expanctancy of more than 1 year . It's also obvious that Inspiron 9200-9300-510M have design faults when you see all the postings in numerous forums about that problem of single-pixel vertical lines on the LCD . So I still insist that you replace the screen of my Inspiron 9300 free of charge ." Will keep you posted . Anne
Ordered 12/12/04. Got first vertical line 12/15/06. About 2 1/2" from left edge, looks CYAN.
Just last night a thin blue vertical line appeared on my display, about 3/4 inches in from the left side. At first I thought it was something that had appeared on a web site, and then not gone away... but I soon realized that it was permanently there, no matter how many reboots, ice cold starts, etc. This system is a little over a year old, cost me a bundle, and I am very upset about it. I think I have a 3 year on-site contract, but am afraid they will say an LCD replacement requires mailing in the system, and I can't live without it.
Vertical line shows up at 18months, 2 months later at 7 lines...hardware defect...fought with out of warranty people, now customer service...told me to pay 599 (199 to get it looked at, 299 for a monitor), thats without tax.
Pixel lines started in September 06. I contacted Dell in October. The diagnostics graphics test revealed a "fail code" of 1000-0333 The lines now are about an inch and a half wide. The tech opened a case number: 147134770 Dell refered me to their spare parts department: 800-372-3355 extension number 7269937. They sell "reconditioned" parts. They were out of LCD screens (part number T 4976) and if they had any they would cost $387.95 I just want a new LCD!!
1 pixel vertical purple line on the left
i haved 6, 1 pixel wide vertical coloured lines on my lcd screen. Istarted with one and in a matter of 1 month it has increased to the amount that i have now which is six.
First vertical line Nov 06, currently 3 lines as of mid Dec 06. Expecting more as per other users experiences. Contacted Dell and was told it was an overheating issue due to charging battery. He suggested (seriously) that I should remove the battery once it is charged if I wish to continue to use mains power.
A red vertical line appeared today on my Inspiron 6000 lcd screen. About 3 inches from the left. Haven't tried to call Dell since I know they can be a tad annoying. So I'm trying to put up with this red-line for now.
Last month, I faced similar issue, where a blue 1 pixel line was observed on my inspiron sllightly to the left from center of the screen. Now the problem has got worse, alongwith the blue line, I have 3 huge black bands, one in the centre and two in the right corner, making it almost imposible to use the laptop. The blue line is also there. I really appreciate this initiative. I am in Bangalore, India and purchased this in USA last year.
2 days ago i got the vertical line near the clock, i went and did a research online and screen costs $400, i know i dont have my warranty, so i call dell and they transfer me everywhere from finance to federal account to tech-support to out of warranty to a voice mail so called again to finance cus everyone tells me i have to get a new warranty, but that would be more money plus it wont cover all the value of the screen, I still owe money on the laptop, and payed already like $1300 so in value the laptop is payed. [NEVER FINANCE A COMPUTER] so I tell them this because i dont want to spend $500 more on something i'm still paying, and told them i never thought the screen would go bad since i know people with 4 year old laptops and no problems, so the the guy gos to speak with his manager and tells me he can trasfer me to out of warranty or i can go to a local shop to have it fixed, I'm so angry cus im stuck with a laptop that is bad and might get worst and i still need to pay like $800 on it due to their high interests rates. and i was thinking on buying a 12"XPS but pay $2000 on something i might have problems later on forget it. I liked dell and trusted them thats way i finance, I even told them that a lot of laptops where having this problem and nothing they didnt care, they just said your warranty has expired and we cant do anything.....
I'm using my laptop as a desktop replacement and i move it very carrefully. I ve paid it 2500 euros The first line appears, in august 2006, a blue one, next day it was a purple than a yellow and a cyan. now i have like 60 or more lines. I got only one year of warranty. I plug it on a external monitor and it works fine.
Of all the cases that were resolved with LCD replacements, were they REFURBISHED LCD????
After 18 months a single green verticle line apeared, since then there are 3 more (2 blue, one red). Now the right 20% of my screen is either dark or begins to start flashing weird color displays like a strobe light. Really distracting and the dead area often covers the scroll-arrows on many aplications. I've had to purchase a seperate monitor to be able to conduct routine business. The laptop in no longer portable due to the defective panel. Dell wants $500 to replace the obviously defective panel. Very poor attitude by Dell toward a customer that has owned 3 Dell PC's and 3 Dell Laptops.
I have 49 lines on the screen that started at just about the 1 year mark. Its about at the point where it is difficult to read.
Mine got a vertical line about 3 months ago, now it has about a dozen vertical lines. I have since completed a laptop transfere form, which is required since I bought my laptop on Ebay, now I have to contact Dell again to see if they can replace my screen.
A thin red line has appeared about two inches from the right-side of the screen.
My computer just started to display a vertical line today. It is about 4 1/2 inches from the right side of my screen and is bright purple. I was looking into solutions and am very disheartened at the fact that I will have to pay over 500 dollars to fix my computer when it is only 20 months old. Even if I do the repair work myself, screens are so expensive, and unfortunately I only had a 1 year warranty.
after 12 months of having my inspiron 9300 a single pixel line from top to bottom apeared, and now i have 5 of them, this is ovbiously a fault with the screen, as my laptop has been used as a desktop since i brought it, never been moved and connected to an external monitor. I'm very unhappy about this problem and also with dell for not allowing me to have their technical support e-mail address as i am now out of warrenty.

Oh, my gosh, I may have found the problem that Dell is blaming us for. I’ve spent about 3 hours on the phone with Dell over the last month, trying to get my 16 year old daughter’s 2005 Christmas present (an Inspiron 6000) fixed. I was busy moving, so she took it upon herself to call in and try to get our “under warranty” laptop repaired. She said the word “dropped” and we are totally screwed now. The laptop’s audio never worked right, the keys started to fall off randomly and then the LCD screen went (probably this vertical line issue!). She’s 16, she knocked it once harder than she thought she should and felt responsible and was honest with them. Now they say the motherboard needs to be repaired and we have to pay $798. The computer worked fine, just not the LCD screen which means there was nothing wrong with the motherboard when I sent it out. I flipped at that and guess what … the price changed to $490 plus taxes. I gave them a choice since I knew we were doomed because she said “dropped” … I offered $200 to fix the LCD since I knew her words couldn’t be erased off their work order AND we would buy the 3 year, $209 accident insurance OR years of my badmouthing Dell and never being a customer again. They wouldn’t budge. So you know, I feel much more comfortable giving the probably $400 repair money to a local businessman and making sure I tell everyone that Dell products aren’t worth the hassle of the guaranteed repair needs. They need to tell the customer service people not to say, “Thank you for chosing Dell” at the end of an angry, unsatisfying call! I said,”You are kidding right?”
vertical line down the left side of the screen, now distortion on the whole screen and missing sections (black sections). when Dell was contacted in regards to the matter, they stated that my part number has not been listed and that I need to wait for my letter to continue with getting my LCD replaced.
Total of 8 lines of various shades of blue, yellow, and red. Have been appearing for about a week now and naturally my computer has been out of warranty for a while.
Solid blue vertical line on the right side of my uxga screen.
Delivered in December 04. After about 18 months it gradually developed an increasing number of lines. I'm up to 8. I have since bought a Vaio. No more Dells thanks. -update- Number of lines is now 13

inspiron 9200 now with 10 lines.. fed up with waiting bought and installed my own lcd from ebay
Bought my Inspiron in May 05 and vertical lines began to appear 15 months later. No satisfaction from Dell. This is my third and last Dell product.
A single white line has appeared down the center of the screen along with some dark, blotchy patches. I have not contacted Dell about this problem, but I plan to after reading about all of the similar complaints. Thank you for setting up this website, Brett
Bought mine August 2005, dissapointed that this showed up only 15 months after getting the unit. I see a single pixel wide yellow line about two inches from the left edge of the screen. Usually I have an external monitor so I am not totally out of luck yet. I took the chance and only got a one year warranty, so I don't have much in the way of a chance to get it replaced. Hopefully Dell will start a recall and offer repairs for everyone. Digg this website to make the problem known: http://digg.com/hardware/Suffering_from_Vertical_Lines_on_Your_Dell_Monitor
Single 1pixel wide vertical line appeared on 25/12/06.
After contacting Dell LCD vertical line outreach numberous times, and sending an email to michael dell, my correspondence was still ignored, so I bought a replacement screen. I WILL NEVER, EVER, NEVER BUY ANOTHER DELL AGAIN. EVER! I will no longer recommend their products to friends, family, and other musicians, nor will I purchase any more machines for my company. Dell had their chance to make good on my issue, and they blew it. DELL, their service, and their products SUCK. Incidentally, my machine is NOT an XPS, like this form says, but a Inspiron 8600, with the WUXGA, 1920 x 1200 screen.
12/28/06 - light blue vertical line showed up the left side of my lcd.
Yep, add me to the list. 18 months after receiving my 9300 17" UXGA, I started getting the lines. Wake up, Dell. This isn't a coincidence.
Wide vertical white band on dell inspiron 9200 just came in to my shop today. We do computer support here. I thought it might be the vid card but was interested that there was an issue with the LCD on this website so I checked again. (Yep that was it). VGA output is fine. I'll see if I can get my tech to battle with dell on the phone. Thanks for the web site.
Contacted Dell C/S was told the same old crap. (Nothing noted as a recall type problem, take it up with no warranty repair.) The lady with an Eastern Indian accent told me that I should have purchased a longer warranty. I explained in so many words that the reason I purchase Dell computers is that they (were) reliable and that I haven't had many problems. I hope Dell will try to keep me as a customer. I will keep trying. Good Luck.
Same story, different person. I have a couple of symptoms in addition to the single vert line. Several dead pixels at spuradic locations as well as a discolored "blotch" approx. 3/4" in diameter at the top right of the screen. Will you please call for a recall Dell!!?
At 16 months, in Sept 06, the first vertical line showed up. By the end of Dec o6, a total of 5 lines were present.
For months I have been getting an increasing number of single pixel lines running vertically on my screen. I currently have 15 lines.
The problem has started just yesterday with the appearance of a blue vertical almost in the middle of the screen. And as i prepared to fill this form another pink line has appeared very next to it. It's veery disheartening to see my glossy screen going bad step by step. I had invested an extra swiss Franc into this laptop just to get the very best of breed laptop at the time in the market. I am very hopeful that after due investigation Dell will realize this as a genuine case of product replacement and we would be able to reinstate our confidence in the market leadership and customer responsiveness of Dell. Till that happens i have to somehow live with this disfigured look on our dear laptop.
I seem to have the same problem as everyone else. One vertical line appearing on my monitor. 21 months after purchase.
Hello all, I am also a recent victim of Dell's ineptitude at resolving issues such as this. I first started noticing the lines in April of 2006 and the number of lines have gone up to about 30. After countless of calls and hours of spent time of being bounced back and forth from out of warranty department and technical support, I decided to write an email to Micheal_Dell@dell.com and cc it to customerresolution_1@dell.com. Amazingly a customer service agent by the name of Varun Madan called me (he was apparently trying to contact me for the past three days but I was only left voice mail messages). He reached me today (12/29/2006) and has agreed to send out a replacement LCD at no charge. I will not update this into a resolved case issue UNTIL the LCD is functioning correctly. By the way I have a LG screen. I have also pasted the letter I sent below. Hello Michael Dell, I am writing this in response to the most recent experience with the technical service and support. The case number in reference to this issue is 152290026. Let me first start off with the issue at hand. Last year I had bought two laptops. My laptop is an Inspiron 9200. I opted out of the extended warranty because I had bought other Dell products before and the qualities on those machines were superb. After my warranty expired, I had started noticing dead vertical pixel lines developing on my LCD screen. I started calling the support line and the technical service line because I wanted this resolved. During that time, the customer service and technical support would continually bounce me back and forth and would not take ownership of this matter. After looking through the websites with the same issue I realized that I was not the only person affected by this. There are many users affected with the same issue. In seeing the response and some successful feedback from Dell in which customer service took ownership of their issue, I thought that my issue would be resolved in the same manner. I was not as fortunate. My most recent experience with the customer service involved with a hang up after I told them about this issue. Through my case number you can see how many times I have contacted Dell’s representatives about this. My background is within the IT industry. On one of the calls through Dell, one of the customer service representatives told me that it was an issue with the user and not through the manufacturer. I understand that there are users out there who destroy their laptops. I am not one of those users. It is also hard for me to believe that a LCD monitor has a lifetime expectancy of less than two years. I have HP monitors that last far much longer than that off of HP’s laptops. I also used to work with an all Dell shop with Nova Southeastern University setting up students and servers with Dell products upon my recommendations and other recommendations. Though Nova Southeastern University is a small school in comparison to other schools, we are one of the largest private schools in the nation. We also have a multitude of Dell users in the staff and student population because of our corporate involvement with Dell. Since then I have moved on (I am still a student at Nova Southeastern University) and am now working with Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Hard Rock is one of the most recognizable names in the commercial world. I also work within the Information Technology department and my involvement includes both corporate and user side. As you can see my experience with any vendor or contact on a personal or business related issue has impact upon many different levels. This may not seem important to you but as you know word of mouth and personal experiences goes a long way as far as product usage and advertisement is concerned. If asked again, because of my experience, I would be reluctant to recommend Dell on a personal basis and also on my corporate basis especially with building up a server farm. I would like to direct you to the few websites I have found with the same issues and complaints about my issue. One of the links as you can see comes directly from the Dell Forum Website as well. I have also noticed that the Dell 5100 series has a class action law suit upon the same issue as well in which the second website http://dellverticalline.com users are beginning to contemplate. I too have contemplated starting a class action law suit upon this matter and have been advised by a lawyer that the first step in the process is to get signatures in a petition. These websites will definitely get me the amount of signatures needed. I have not yet started but my patience is wearing thin. http://forums.devshed.com/computer-hardware-103/single-pixel-lines-in-dell-inspiron-screen-382937-5.html http://dellverticalline.com/ http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=insp_general&message.id=232266&c=us&l=en&cs=&s=gen My resolution to this issue is simply a replacement LCD monitor to correct this issue at no cost to me because of a manufacturer defect. Please help me resolve this issue and restore my faith within Dell products and company as a whole. If possible I would like to speak to somebody who actually wants to take ownership of this issue and not get bounced around and be made a fool of like what I have been experiencing. We'll see what happens.
About three weeks ago my Dell Insiron 9300 developed a single vertical line on the far right side of the 17" display. Just a few days ago another vertical line developed. Today, 12/30/2006, I decided to do some research on the issue and, to my suprise, I found that there are many others in the same boat. I am currently online with Dell (on hold of course) after already being transferred to the "correct department" once. It seems my warranty expired yesterday so I will likely get the out of warranty line.
Got one line last week on my inspiron 9300. Haven't contacted dell yet. I bought mine in canada. My warranty is up. Not sure if I should contact dell or just purchase an extended warranty now then call dell. Hopefully this website will take us somewhere. Any suggestions?
One-pixel blue vertical line that appears about half a centimeter from the left side of the monitor. It appears a few seconds after the monitor powers up and does not go away until the monitor is powered down, despite changes to resolution or other settings.
Got one line down the right side last week and got another today, so i'm guessing there are gonna be more to come... at first the line would come and go, but now it just stays there. Haven't contacted dell yet but i may do so soon
Total of 8 lines of various shades of blue, yellow, and red. Have been appearing for about a week now and naturally my computer has been out of warranty for a while.
I've got a blue line (one pixel wide) on my screen since about 1 month. This is mostly one similar case as discribed in the other cases. I now have 8 lines ! yellow, blue and magenta ! This is becoming very nice !!!
I received my 9200 in January 2005. I got the first vertical line in Septemer 2006 and now the second one appeared on 12/30/2006. I thought I was the only one but after reading various posts and forums I realize that I am not. I paid close to 1400.00 for this laptop and I really dont want to pay upwards to 500 for a new LCD screen. I am not sure what to do , from reading these posts it looks like the majority have not been satisfied. Dell doesnt care , my next laptop will be another brand, can anyone recommend a good brand for laptops Joe
I have a Inspiron 9300 and my problem started with one red line down center of the screen, and slowly added another one, and just yesterday two more have popped up for a total of four. Like many others said, we pay the extra for the premium screen WUXGA screens and this happens in about a year or so. I have three Dell monitors and now every time I turn them on I think about how many lines maybe on them. I will think twice about buying a Dell computer and monitors now because of the runaround they have been giving us. We all know that Dell is in the business to make money, but at some point they will have to recognize that this is a big problem. I will make it known to my customers what has happened to my Dell Laptop and I will not recommend Dell unless this gets resolved.
vertical lines of color are appearing on the screen. it started with one line a month ago and now we have 12 !! we paid over 2000$ for this computer a year ago, Dell won't replace.
17" screen no problems until around 9/06. The ugly line decided to rear its ugly head and I haven't been able to clear the problem since. Dell support is no help at all. I will keep calling and emailing and hopefully they will do something about their faulty product.
Same scenario as many others. I was just playing a video game on my 9300 laptop with a 17" UltraSharp Wide Screen XGA+ display when a blue vertical line started to flicker on the right side of my screen. At first I thought it would go away, perhaps even after a reboot, but no such luck. This is only the first line I've encountered, hopefully there won't be many more... but I'm just waiting for it. Update: I posted a thread on Dell's Forum - The message thread was deleted two days after posting, without notification. There was no vulgar content in it, I simply stated that I had an Inspiron 9300 model, and I had the Vertical Line of Death pop up and that after much searching on the internet, I was just waiting for it to get worse. I also posted on a related thread (not started by me) that many additional people were having the same problem as the original poster. In this message, I included the www.dellverticalline.com URL so that the original poster could verify that they had the same issue. I also received message that this thread was deleted from the forums. Here is the actual content of that forum message that was deleted: "I've got the same issue. Just had my first line pop up. I purchased the 9300 around Aug. '05. www.dellverticalline.com This deserves to be acknowledged by Dell." ...looks like they are doing as little as possible to acknowledge it, just brushing it under the rug.
single blue vertical pixel from top to screen to bottom approximately 3/4 of the way from the left side.
10 vertical lines in screen from magenta to cyan...
I also purchased my Dell Inspiron 9300 in April 2005 and in the end of September 2006 I noticed a red line appeared on my monitor. It is, of course, out of warranty and now I am trying to figure how I should go about contacting Dell. I think if I call they are going to charge me and I don't believe I should be charged anything for this major hardware flaw. Besides writing letters, has anyone had any luck getting through without having to pay to talk to someone? It is now January 2, 2007 and I now have 5 lines! 1 Red, 2 Blue, 1 Green, and 1 yellow...I know I will get more, but I don't believe I should pay for this. These screens should last longer than a year and a half! We are definitely not alone in this. There is another forum with many other Dell Inspiron 9300 customers who have the same problem. With as many computers as this is affecting I believe this is a manufacturing problem and Dell should fix these monitors at no charge or they will lose even more customers. I have always been a believer in Dell hardware, but now I feel ripped off and if there is nothing they will do to fix this problem, then I am going to report them to the BBB and never buy a Dell again. I will also tell everyone I know of this issue and what poor customer service Dell has.
Single vertical line top to bottom of lcd panel approx 1/3 from left hand edge of lcd. Dell absolutely refuses to acknowledge any manufacturing defect even after referring them to this website. I have given up. Will not deal with Dell again. Found replacement panel on EBAY. FYI, if you purchased you laptop on a Credit Card check to see if the Credit Card company extends your warranty. My VISA card included this protection & is paying for the LCD replacement.
thin vertical line straight down from about 3/4 of the screen from the right, changes colors depending on how dark the picture is behind it.
A vertical one-pixel line has appeared on my less than two year old lap top, I still have not recieved a soluton from dell except to buy a new screen.
Inspiron 6000 WUXGA went bad today !!!!
One yellow line. Not thrilled. Not the 1st problem I have had either. No hope in sight. Only solution might be a bottle of vodka and a sledgehammer. Not sure which one would be for me or the computer, but one of us wouldn't make it home.
Purchased my Dell Inspiron 9200 and use it almost every day. Lost my hard drive a few months after purchase. Had the batteries recalled last fall. Customer support was OK with these items. This week a singe green vertical line has appeared about three inches in from the left. Appears at boot up and not on external monitors. I figured this was a high quality screen when I got it and it seems a little early to be having trouble.
Very poor attitude by Dell toward a customer that has owned 3 Dell PC's and 3 Dell Laptops.
first of all i live in sweden and i got the same problem. when i got my comp it had the original samsung screen 1400*900 and it sucks. i have horrible light leakage. its so bad that you cant get e good picture, its ether to bright or to dark. beside the lightleakage the screen looks like it have a layer of dust on it... it IS the worst screen i have ever seen. so i talked to dell and the replaced my screen to exactly the same screen and the same poblems. They changed my screen 2 times more but no help then they desided to change my video card but it dident help either. so the called me end offered my my money back but it dident know if i wanted it back becosue there is nothing like this com out there. so i told them to call me end explain how i send it back but its been 3 months and they still havent call me ... is still dont know if i whant to change but i know i can.
About 2 months ago the first line appeared; solid yellow line. Now, two months later, I'm up to 19 lines unevenly grouped across the screen. My warranty expired several months before the first line appeared. I've had the IT techs at my office look at it and they said I need a new LCD screen. Just wanted to add my experience to this site. Haven't even had the Inspiron for two years and I'm dropping another $400 on it to replace the LCD screen.
I currently have three lines on my screen, the first two i was able to ignore thinking i just had to reload my video card driver.. or something along those lines. The third line is right in the middle of my screen so i decided to look online to see if there was an easy fix. Then i found this webpage. I'm a college student and the laptop is my main computer for school and home. I'm really not happy with this. I hope Dell hooks me up, or i will probably go to a mac.
A vertical blue line appeared on my screen today about 4 inches from the left. My Inspiron 9300 is just over 21 months old. I called Dell customer support and the individual I spoke with claimed that he had not heard of this problem previously. I referred him to this website. I also told him that many are reporting the same response of ignorance of this problem when they call Dell, when it has actually been widely reported. (Including being discussed in Dell's own forum!) Everyone with this problem needs to keep calling. He was unable/unwilling to help me. I will follow up tomorrow. Hopefully Dell will resolve this issue appropriately. Update 1/9/07: I spoke with Dell on 1/8/07 and 1/9/007. Dell is still refusing to acknowledge that this is a wide spread problem and that the screens should be recalled. The posts on this site are helpful, but unless people contact Dell directly they will continue to say the vertical line problems are just internet conversation and that there is not a widespread problem and they won't replace the screens free of charge. They need to have it logged into their system that people are having the same problem, by way of individual calls. EVERYONE NEEDS TO CALL DELL! A good number to call is Dell Customer Care 1-800-808-9488 and state your problem, ask for a resolution that is appropriate for a widely defective part and if you are not satisfied ask them to file a complaint with management of Dell. Do not agree to be routed anywhere other than Customer Care! We will not get Dell to react appropriately unless people CALL!
So I purchased this Notebook from Dell as a repeat customer, this time for well over $2K which is more than I ever paid for a computer system and this is what I got; the LCD starting to show those lines literally days after the warranty expired and then of course nothing but quacking from them about how they can't help me and I tried a few letters and calls, but still nothing, so I may have to bite this bullet soon since the LCD's almost non-functional at this point, but that certainly wouldn't get my recommendation or business again...
yellow vertical line one pixel wide affecting screen. After two days of receiving notebook.
Almost 16 months to the day, my screen developed a line 1/3 of the way from the left. Of course I contacted Dell. My particular Customer "Service" Rep refused to believe anyone else has this problem at all. He continued to refuse even as I told him to go check the Dell Forum, as there are at least 3-4 different posts on this matter. Well, I thought I would have to live with the problem. I mean, it couldn't get any worse, right? Sure. On 12/20 I got my second line near the center of the screen. I sure am glad I paid extra to get the higher quality screen.
Same story. Half my screen is out and quite frankly dell can do you know what. I will follow up with them, but I won't give them a dime. I'm thinking Toshiba.
First vertical line appeared in September of 2006. There are now 5 vertical lines of various colors. Have not contacted Dell to this point but would like to get this resolved.
Vertical lines started to appear on my Inspiron 9200 in September 2006 I now have too many lines to count and the screen is unusable. Contacted Dell and they are still saying this is not a known problem and that I need to pay for repair. I will keep this case going until I get a replacement LCD free of charge. Hopefully this website will get Dell to acknowledge the issue as a known problem soon.
i also bought a inspiron 9300 and its been about a year and half since i bought it. as of now i have 40 of those lines in my screen. I think i shouldn't have to buy a new LCD. I called and they offered me a new LCD for $400. I told them no.
About one year after the warranty expired, one vertical line appeared on the screen as I was watching it! Over the next month, more and more lines appeared, almost daily. Now I have more than 20 vertical lines.
Same problem here, talked to dell, they want 500$ to replace screen. I am not happy. I ordered 3 Inspiron 9300's and ALL OF THEM are experiencing a multi colored verical line on the right side of the screen. Monitor output works perfectly and I have tested the monitor on working laptops. This is a major problem dell needs to address by either a recall or an extended warranty plan.
I have an Inspiron 9300 laptop and today I noticed the blue, vertical line that everyone else has talked about. I purchased my laptop in 4/05 and am out of the warranty. I called Dell (after reading your site). I talked to tech support (who was very pleasant in trying to help me diagnose the problem but to no avail). The LCD has gone bad. I then asked for a manager and did indeed speak to one, but he was only the floor manager. I was friendly but firm that I wanted a replacement LCD. He offered $50 off repair or to be "esculated" up to talk with an executive team manager. I chose the latter. They are to call me tomorrow. I will strongly request that they replace my screen otherwise why would I pay $300-$600 for a repalcement when I can use that money toward the purchase of a new laptop - and it won't be a Dell.
Vertical line problem occurs on 70% of my screen. At first it was random and now it occurs all the time. If I keep rotating the lcd it sometimes goes away, other times, it's unusable. Will try calling dell....
First purple line appeared in 10-06 and last week a greenish line appeared. Have not yet contacted Dell about the problem.
just got my cyan vertical line like 30 minutes ago...resetting my laptop twice..it's still there...change resolutions..it's still there...then i know this LCD is broken....then I google vertical line dell...i am here....now i feel sad...IT IS BROKEN!!!!
Vertical Line showed up on the left hand side fo the screen and another is showing up in the middle of the screen
one vertical blue line
I am in the US. I've spoken to numerous people at Dell and both customer service and tech support in both India and the United States. I've tried every argument presented on this website. I have emaled them too. They are sticking to their story that the screens are not defective. I believe the only solution is a class-action lawsuit. If anyone would like to begin this process I'd like to assist them. Here is a screen shot of the classic first purple line.
I recieved my Dell Inspiron 9300 its been little over a year and today my LCD on the right side was flickering and i was very much surprised. Of course its out of warranty and i dont see it happen anymore but i would hate if the problem persists.
I had my laptop fixed six months out of warranty.People you need to call them and be nice and give this this web sight .I had my new screen installed 2 days after I called them...
In Oct. 2006 the first line appeared; now there are about 6 of them. Sometimes there are more, sometimes fewer. on Jan. 8, 2007, I called Dell's Exired Warranty Support and paid $52.00 for them to tell me that I needed to call Spare parts and get a new one. The technician did help me through reseating the LCD and antenna cables, but that had no effect. I wonder how much a new LCD costs?
Got 1 vertical purple line about 3 months out of warranty. Over the next 9 months, 4 more lines of different colors have shown up.
2 vertical single pixel lines - one cyan and one pink
Just spent 2 hours on the phone with Dell hearing that their defective product is my problem to deal with. I seem to have the rarer of the two types of issues I've read about. The bottom third of my screen is solid vertical lines. There is a spot on the LCD frame on the left hand side about 1/3 of the way up. If I touch that spot the lines disappear momentarily. When I release the frame they come back. This is a short. This is a design flaw. But apparantly it's all my fault. Now, this is actually the 2nd time this happened. The first time I was about 10 months into my 1 yr warranty. They replaced the screen. Now I'm out of warranty and they won't replace it again. Oh, well. This will wind up hurting Dell more than me as I will absolutely never purchase a Dell again. I'm in IT and make purchase recommendations for PCs and Servers all the time. I've often recommended Dell. No more. They blew it big time.
I love my Inspiron 9300 and especially high resolution wide screen. A few months after my warranty ran out (November '06) a blue vertical line appeared on the right side of my screen. Since then I have had an additional 3 vertical lines appear on the left side of my screen. This seems to be an escalating problem and I will start getting in touch with Dell immediately. I hope I have luck and manage to get this resolved. My first phone call to customer support was on 01/10/07 in the AM. I was told to call back hours later since Dell's systems were down. I then called on the 01/10/07 in the early evening and was offered an extended warranty. I want this problem solved ASAP and therefore am accepting the offer.
First purple vertical line appeared in October 2006 on my Inspiron 9200 about three inches from the left side of the screen; it then flickered and turned yellow. Two weeks later, about fifty closely hatched purple lines appeared (about the short width of an index card) two inches from the right side of the screen. Now half of them are flickering different colors and turning white, so that part of the screen is completely illegible. I am, of course, 8 months out of warranty.
Vertical Line on LCD screen
I'm a UK Dell customer so if you're having the same issue please read on. I had the same irritating vertical lines problem. Mine started appearing in July of '06 and up to this point I've notched up 29 lines of varying colours. Of course the warranty was two months out of date when I first encountered and reported it. No surprise then when the tech support informed me that I'd needed to buy a replacement LCD screen from their parts department. I wasn't best pleased so I begrudgingly tolerated it until I came across this site yesterday when searching for the exact cause. It inspired me to contact Dell but first I checked out my consumer rights with regards to the issue. Which are as follows: For UK Dell customers- If you have this problem, regardless of warranty you are perfectly within your rights according to 1979 Sale of Goods Act to request a repair, replacement, or partial refund. Consumer Direct advised me to write a letter and send it via recorded delivery to Dell explaining the problem and alerting them to breach of contract under sale of goods with minor defects and lack of expected durability. However, before I did this I rang up customer support whom I verbally warned (politely!) that they were in breach contract and requested a replacement screen. After being put on hold I was told that they'd have an engineer with me tomorrow. I also requested a confirmation email which I have since received so I have proof if the engineer doesn't show tomorrow. So if you're a UK customer and are having the same vertical lines problem you have the law on your side, and it's worth contacting trading standards or consumer direct. Both have excellent websites and will tell you your rights plain and straight. I seem to have been fortunate in Dell's response but if you're not so lucky there are steps beyond what I've done that these should help with. http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk
one vertical line. appears to be the same as everyone else's. It's just to the left of center.
now have 2 vertical 1 pixel lines blue and yellow posted this gave up on phone went into dell.co.uk/chat sorted inside an hour engineer arrives in few days to replace my screen free of charge as a goodwill gesture as this is not a known issue accoring to dell, but then if they admitted it was known it would cost them a fortune doing another recall tbh so cant blame them on that, just go via chat much much faster spoke thurs, screen replaced following monday
About 3 weeks ago, first line (blue) on right side of screen, 2nd and 3rd area yellow to the left of mid-line showed up a few days later, 4th one arrived today, also yellow and more to the left. We really stretched our budget to buy this computer, taking the advice of a dear friend in IT who said always get the best you can and go one more... Have 2 Dell PCs, this laptop, 2 Dell printers, and 1 DJ Ditty. This loyal Dell family needs stellar Customer Service!
The admin needs to maintain unique cases in the unresolved lisy
Total of 8 lines of various shades of blue, yellow, and red. Have been appearing for about a week now and naturally my computer has been out of warranty for a while.
Turned on my 9300 this morning and saw a vertical red line on the screen... Thought "Hmmm... This can't be right..." Googled "dell 9300 vertical line red screen..." Ended up here! Guess I'll be contacting Dell, then... Wish me luck! UPDATED 20/02/07 Spoke to Dell on the phone... After some persuasion, Dell sent an engineer round - free of charge - even though the laptop was out of warranty and now I have a lovely, brand-new, line-free screen! Issues resolved... UPDATED 02/03/07 Issues resolved... Erm... For a week!!! There are now TWO vertical lines - one blue, one green on the new screen... Hmmm... Let's see what Dell do now!
A vertical green line appeared on my monitor today (01/13/2007). Right in the middle. I'm still to contact Dell, although I have the feelling that it will not end up well... I live in Brazil and the Notebook was bought in the USA. Dell-Brazil and Dell-USA do not share responsibilities, as all big companies worldwide.
Green line on screen, plus battery plug broken.
During normal regular use, a vertical line started appearing on the left side of my screen. At first i thought it was probably a loose connection or faulty bootup, so first thing i re-booted the computer. after a few attempts i checked the output on a plasma screen to determine if the probolem was with the graphics card or screen. The prob was def with the screen. I ended up taking up apart my screen, and checkin over all the connections to no avail. I will be contacting Dell support and see what they have to say in regard to this.
Permanent, vertical lines are appearing on the LCD screen, one-by-one of my INSPIRON 9300. Today (January 13, 2007) I have 4 lines, one purple, one yellow and two light blue. The date the computer was shipped may be wrong. I will have to find the paperwork.
Vertical lines in the middle of the screen appear one month ago. Some new lines appear every 5-6 days. Now, I've got a big line in the middle of the screen, I've the impression that these lines are not dead ant that the pictures on my screen are still visible but covered by these lines.
Vertical lines appears on LCD screen. Starting from 1 light blue line to 2 light blue lines. Another light yellow line is starting to appear, flickering on and off infrequently. after 8 months, 3/4 of the screen is now full of vertical lines... its a rainbow of colors now...
My husband and I both bought one, I had one line show up before warranty ran out, they replace my monitor so far no issues, his on the other hand now has two lines and they won't do anything. We will never by a Hell-DELL again. Very unhappy.
A one pixel wide vertical line appeared on my LCD screen in January 07. It is a pink line. I have talked to customer service/tech support people at Dell but they are not admitting the problem all insisting I have to pay for a new screen. They are denying it is a genuine problem with Dell 9300 laptop shipped around April/May 2005.
My screen started with just a couple of vertical lines down the screen about a month after my warranty ran out. Dell customer support was no help. I took it to an independent and he said that he has seen this many times before in the past 12 months and it was the LCD and good luck with that! This computer was an investment for my family and I and I feel like I have been taken advantage of big time. I have always loved my past Dell purchases that's why I wouldn't go with anyone else when I purchased this notebook. I guess I was mistaken. What a BIG, EXPENSIVE mistake.
I just got my first vertical line and dell doesn't seem to be wanting to help. After reading on the dell forum it sounds like there are more to come. Mine is on the right hand side of the screen 3/4 appx. of the way across from left to right.
Started as single line 1/4" from right edge. Within 5 days has expanded to 5 lines from right at 1/4, 1-3/8, 2-7/8, 4-7/8, 13-7/8. Contacted DELL 1/8/06, received reply 1/10/06. I was told: "[DELL does not] know of no "known issues" with this system model. Had there been one, Dell would have taken whatever steps were necessary to rectify the situation. While message boards and forums can provide valuable tips and information, those identifying "known issues" are, more often than not, basing their information on hearsay or opinion and not facts. Those opinions are often based on a fraction of the
